MPAC and the Newseum are partnering to hold a discussion on how blasphemy laws violate the fundamental human right of free speech. This panel will present the status of blasphemy laws in the world today, and examine the use of these laws in some countries to stifle dissent.

Today is a big day. The Supreme Court is hearing a case looking at the limits of religious freedom in the prison setting. The case, Holt v. Hobbs, involves an Arkansas prisoner petitioning to grow a half-inch beard, which the Arkansas Department of Correction (ADC) believes is hazardous to prison security. -

As thousands of American Muslims embark on Hajj every year, this year presented a new set of issues for travelers that voiced their fears of attacks that other pilgrims have faced in the past. After collectively addressing these pressing issues, the State Department emplaced initiatives and protocols to protect American Muslims at Hajj. -

On Sunday, MPAC President Salam Al-Marayati moderated a panel discussion at the Islamic Center of Southern California called “Gaza Teach-In: War Crimes and Settler Colonialism,” between two experts on the crisis. Palestinian Professor George Bisharat of UC Berkeley School of Law and Israeli Professor Gabriel Pieterberg of UCLA's Center for Near Eastern Studies discussed exposed how Israel’s military campaign violates countless international laws and also is rooted in settler colonialism. -

Last Saturday, MPAC took part in Orange County’s Annual Eid Festival held in Anaheim, CA. Attended by thousands, the event featured table displays from dozens of organizations, as well as their efforts in providing a celebration for the holiday. It was a great opportunity for Muslims, as well as non-Muslims, to learn more about Eid and Islam. -

The Bilal Islamic Center in south Los Angeles hosted MPAC President Salam Al-Marayati last weekend for a talk about the parallels between the Medina Constitution and the U.S. Constitution. The Medina Constitution is the social contract created between the Prophet Muhammad with leaders of other faith communities. -

Last week, more than 60 community leaders and young professionals joined MPAC at our L.A. office for our annual Community Iftar. Community leaders, alumni from our young leaders programs and young professionals from all over Southern California who have worked with MPAC in one way or another came togehter to see old friends and to make new ones. -

Ellison shared his unique experience as the first American Muslim elected to Congress, through passages from his new book "My Country 'Tis of Thee: My Family, My Faith, Our Future.” -

My aspirations for making the dreams of our future Muslim generations come true plays a large role in my field of work, community outreach. I hope to bring MPAC to different communities outside of Los Angeles in order to help them get involved in the kind of work that we do. I strongly believe that American Muslims must be at the table, lest they will be on the menu. In order to relieve the U.S. from the stereotypes and Islamophobia targeting Muslims, we must put ourselves in the nerve centers that make the major decisions for our communities. -

Yesterday, MPAC President Salam Al-Marayati participated in a panel discussion following a screening of HBO’s new documentary “The Newburgh Sting” at the AFI Docs Documentary Festival in Washington, DC.The documentary, which will debut on HBO on July 21, reveals the FBI’s involvement in the domestic terror case of the “Newburgh Four,” which targeted a Muslim community in the disadvantaged neighborhood of Newburgh, NY and lured individuals into agreeing to commit acts of terrorism. -

MPAC rebukes the intolerable actions of a Sudanese court in sentencing a pregnant woman to death for what it claims to be apostasy. The Sudanese court, along with so many other authorities in Muslim-majority countries that are invoking sharia, is violating the core Quranic principle which states, “There shall be no compulsion in religion” (2:256).
