The death of 18 year-old Michael Brown last month grabbed national headlines not only because the life of an unarmed youth was tragically stolen, but because of the underlying racial tensions that it exposed in the community of Ferguson, Mo. However, the growing protests and subsequent coverage showed that the racial tensions exposed are, in fact, pervasive across the country. -

Tens of thousands of people from around the United States joined together in front of the White House to protest the horrifying violence in Gaza. Both MPAC's Washington, DC office and Western New York chapter (MPAC-WNY) stood in solidarity with stand in solidarity with so many other diverse people demanding human rights for Palestinians at the national rally. -

This morning, The Intercept revealed that five high-profile American Muslims were subject to years-long secret surveillance by the FBI and NSA between the years 2002-2009. Documents leaked by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden exposed that those targeted include: Faisal Gill, former Department of Homeland Security top advisor in the Bush Administration; Asim Ghafoor, well known defense attorney; Hooshang Amirahmadi, Iranian-American professor at Rutgers University; Agha Saeed, former political science professor at California State University; and Nihad Awad, Executive Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). -

What happens when a violent conflict, that has already claimed the lives of over 140,000 people, continues with no end in sight? Very little, by the looks of our policy on Syria. Sadly, the longer the conflict drags on, the more that the moderate voices who represent the vast majority of the Syrian people are being drowned out by extremists on all sides. This is a disservice to the righteous cause of freedom which Syrians are striving for. -

In late March, MPAC hosted a “Let’s Be Honest” forum with the Muslim Youth Group (MYG) of the Islamic Center of Southern California (ICSC). With the intent of tackling taboo topics such as drugs and alcohol, premarital sex and homosexuality, the forum, for the first time, brought together a panel of MYG members and elders. -

MPAC expressed its disappointment with a federal ruling that the New York Police Department’s (NYPD) surveillance of Muslims in New Jersey was “a lawful effort to prevent terrorism.” Eight plaintiffs brought the suit against New York City, claiming that the NYPD infringed on their civil liberties with its mass surveillance of Muslim communities in New Jersey.
