Today, several faith and security leaders signed a joint statement calling for unity of all faiths and partnership with law enforcement in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon tragedy. As President Obama is participating in an interfaith memorial service in Boston at this time, the group is preparing for dealing with challenges to our national defense from a faith-base community perspective.

MPAC congratulates Masjid Alnoor, the Islamic Center of South Bay, for reaching a historic settlement with the City of Lomita through the intervention of the Department of Justice. Following an inquiry raised by MPAC, the DOJ opened a case, which led to this week’s ruling that the City of Lomita violated the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act of 2000 (RLUIPA) when it denied the Islamic center’s application to build a new mosque on its property. -

MPAC's Director of Policy and Programming Edina Lekovic was re-elected to serve a second term on the board, alongside Imam Taha Hassane from the Islamic Center of San Diego and Imam Jihad Saafir of Masjid Ibaadullah. -

Last Friday, MPAC's Hollywood Bureau hosted “Mohammad, Muslims and Movies: Reflections on the Legacy of Moustapha Akkad’s ‘The Message,’ ” a special screening and panel discussion of the iconic 1976 film that chronicles the life and times of Prophet Muhammad. Between clips and discussion, the audience learned the personal story behind the legendary film and its director. -

On Monday, Oct. 22, the NYC subway system will feature ads by MPAC, which is an effort to counter the recent hateful and divisive ad released by Pamela Geller’s organization, AFDI. MPAC today condemned the Taliban’s appalling attack against Malala Yousafzai, an innocent 14-year-old girl in Pakistan, who was advocating for education. On Sept. 20, MPAC attended the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee’s important and timely hearing on “Hate Crimes and the Threat of Domestic Terrorism.” Addressing growing concerns that hate groups are on the rise and that attacks could happen anywhere, Durbin highlighted that this is the first hearing in recent years focused on the threat of violent domestic extremists.
