Following Abdul El-Sayed’s Democratic primary victory in Michigan, a number of Republican members of Congress have responded with anti-Muslim rhetoric and attacks targeting American Muslim communities.
Elected officials have a responsibility to uphold democratic norms and reject rhetoric that marginalizes Americans based on their faith or background. Political disagreement cannot become an excuse for collective targeting or religious bigotry.
We thank Senator Bill Cassidy for condemning this clearly anti-Muslim rhetoric and affirming an important truth that American Muslims are an integral part of our communities and our country.
