This tragedy mirrors the horrific killing of six-year-old Wadea in Chicago, yet local and national public officials remain silent. Salam directly links this localized violence to broader political tactics - pointing out the 61 members of Congress fueling "Islamic conspiracy" theories and states like Texas and Florida treating peaceful civic groups and mosques as threats. After the attacks of September 11, 2001, there was a sharp rise in anti-Muslim sentiment that resulted in hate crimes and assaults against American Muslims and those incorrectly perceived to be Muslim, including Sikhs, Hindus and others.
