As the world anxiously awaits the return of nearly 300 kidnapped school girls to their families in Nigeria, MPAC is joining forces with Los Angeles’ interfaith community for the #BringBackOurGirls Interfaith Vigil and Call to Action on Tuesday, June 10 at 7 p.m. at Wilshire Boulevard Temple. -

MPAC today condemned the repugnant actions of Boko Haram, which claimed responsibility for kidnapping over 300 teenage schoolgirls from a school in Nigeria three weeks ago. Boko Haram, which translates as “Western education is sinful,” has once again violated core Islamic teachings that value all human life as sacred, prohibit depriving people of their basic freedoms, and mandate seeking knowledge as an obligatory duty of every Muslim. -

MPAC's recent partnership with the White House to host a historic forum recognizing the contributions of American Muslim women brought together successful women from across the country to the White House. During the event, titled “Beyond the Ceiling: Groundbreaking Voices of American Muslim Women,” MPAC and the White House recognized over 80 American Muslim women in the fields of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), business development, government, communications and entrepreneurship. -

As Women's History month draws to a close, MPAC and the White House recognized American Muslim women and their accomplishments in the fields of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), business development, government, communications and entrepreneurship. Today's event brought together more than 70 successful women from across the country to the White House. -

On March 15, 2014, more than 80 women and girls gathered for the successful 2nd Annual Women and Girls Retreat co-sponsored by MPAC, the Islamic Center of Irvine (ICOI) and New Horizon Irvine (NHI). Focusing on the theme of “Making Our Voices Heard,” nine dynamic and inspiring speakers shared their knowledge and know-how to empower the participants to be inspired by the legacy of women before them, identify their dreams, support each other to pursue them, and be able to share their stories effectively. -

Hailing from Gaithersburg, MD, Salimatu Jalloh is MPAC's new policy and legislature intern in the DC office. Graduating from the University of Maryland, College Park, in May 2013, with a degree in government and politics, Jalloh became interested in advocacy civic engagement through her work with Terps for Change, a campus service organization that focuses on addressing poverty, homelessness and education inequalities. -

Joined by screenwriters and producers Kamran Pasha and Sameer Gardezi, Mohiuddin, a Pakistani American, moderated a panel on "Exploring the Pakistani American Identity and Community Relations." -

Last week, Marium Mohiuddin, MPAC's Communications Coordinator, was invited by UNICEF to speak on a panel about the documentary "To Educate a Girl." The powerful documentary takes a ground-up and visually stunning view of that effort through the eyes of girls out of school, starting school or fighting against the odds to stay in school. -

Earlier this month, Edina Lekovic, MPAC’s Director of Policy and Programming, traveled to Zagreb, Croatia, where she spoke at a conference about the social status of Muslim women in Europe. Lekovic presented a lecture on “Uncovering the Real Me: Western Muslim Women Under the Spotlight” before an audience which included the mufti of Croatia, a Bosnian ambassador, academics and community members. -

More than 75 women and girls gathered for a special day-long retreat at New Horizon School in Irvine, CA on "Discovering Your Best Self." MPAC teamed up with the Islamic Center of Irvine and New Horizon to create a unique experience where women and girls could experience a supportive environment to reflect on their lives and voices as they explore self-esteem, media images, speaking with confidence, and health and nutrition. -

Today, the House of Representatives reauthorized the passage of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and sent it to President Barack Obama’s desk to be signed into law. We congratulate House Republicans for breaking the political gridlock on the new provisions added in the bill by the Senate and voting for the greater good. -
