MPAC and the Newseum are partnering to hold a discussion on how blasphemy laws violate the fundamental human right of free speech. This panel will present the status of blasphemy laws in the world today, and examine the use of these laws in some countries to stifle dissent.

Today is a big day. The Supreme Court is hearing a case looking at the limits of religious freedom in the prison setting. The case, Holt v. Hobbs, involves an Arkansas prisoner petitioning to grow a half-inch beard, which the Arkansas Department of Correction (ADC) believes is hazardous to prison security. -

Al-Marayati’s central argument is that “America needs Islam -- not to convert people to the religion, but as the antidote to the toxic and threatening ideology of ISIS.” -

MPAC President Salam and Al-Marayati, along with Community Outreach Coordinator Cherif Abou El Fadl and Special Projects Fellow Omar Noureldin published an op-ed in “On Faith” this week called “Takfirism: The Key to Understanding ISIL.” The op-ed explores the method through which ISIL uses Islam to justify it’s crimes. It also explores ISIL’s “ideological underpinnings” by looking at the history of takfirism and offers recommendations on how the United States can combat violent extremism. -

Originally from Tempe, AZ, Ncube is a third year student at Occidental College in Los Angeles. As news continues to pour out over the current conflict between Hamas and Israel, we cannot forget the ongoing crisis in Syria. To date, the total death toll of Syrians is almost at 40,000. The Syrian revolution has been ongoing since March 2011, but after the formation of a coalition of Syrian opposition groups in Doha on Nov. 11 known as the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces (NCSROF), MPAC views this development with hope for the future of Syria. -
