Nathan Cirrillo and victims who were injured during the heinous attack. We stand in solidarity with the Canadian people.

The Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) condemns the barbaric execution of American Journalist James Foley by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and urges all people of conscience to take a stand against extremism. Mr. Foley was a journalist who courageously covered the atrocities against the Syrian people. We offer our condolences to his family and friends -

The Against Violent Extremism (AVE) Network, a global network tackling violent extremism, featured MPAC’s Safe Spaces Initiative in their April newsletter as a “Project Spotlight.” The AVE Network is made up of former extremists and survivors of extremism working together to prevent violent extremism. They are unique in their use of technology to “connect, exchange, disseminate and influence all forms of violent extremism.” -

Today, MPAC held a press conference alongside notable Muslim community leaders at the National Press Club to announce a new campaign to actively prevent violent extremism. Called the Safe Spaces Initiative, the campaign is the first major national grassroots effort to equip American Muslim community and campus leaders with practical tools for developing healthy communities as well as intervention strategies for troubled individuals. -

This Friday, MPAC will be joined by prominent American Muslim leaders for a press conference to stand together and sign a “Declaration Against Extremism,” a document authored by MPAC Senior Adviser, Dr. Maher Hathout, reflecting upon his thoughts and priorities. -

Earlier this week, MPAC sent a letter to Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Director John Pistole offering condolences following the shooting last week at Los Angeles International Airport that left one TSA officer dead and wounded six others. -

On Sunday, June 30, MPAC, All Saints Episcopal Church, Pasadena, and Homeboy Industries co-sponsored a powerful community forum -- “From Despair to Hope: Connecting the Dots Between Gangs and Violent Extremism” -- to examine the plague of violence at the hands of young men in our society today. “Violence is the language of despair,” explained Father Greg Boyle, Founder of Homeboy Industries. “We must infuse hope to those in despair, work to heal trauma and provide mental health care when needed.” -

In the aftermath of the tragic events in Boston, the hot topic once again is the conversation around countering violent extremism and the role the American Muslim community can play in ensuring that our nation remains safe. Though Muslim organizations, institutions and leaders sent out messages of unity and solidarity in response to the tragedy, we must continue to show leadership in approaching and eliminating the scourge of violent extremism. -

MPAC expresses its condolences for all those in Boston and with the families and loved ones of the two victims and at least 100 injured from the explosions. MPAC condemns this terrorist attack; this is a horrible crime, and we call on all of us as Americans to work together to bring those responsible to justice. -

American Muslim activists have unfairly been accused of being Islamists, as in synonymous for militants, extremists or radicals. We applaud AP for this step in accurate reporting about Islam and Muslims, and we look forward to other media outlets following AP’s lead. -

As news continues to pour out over the current conflict between Hamas and Israel, we cannot forget the ongoing crisis in Syria. To date, the total death toll of Syrians is almost at 40,000. The Syrian revolution has been ongoing since March 2011, but after the formation of a coalition of Syrian opposition groups in Doha on Nov. 11 known as the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces (NCSROF), MPAC views this development with hope for the future of Syria. -

Today, MPAC expressed grave concern about the rapidly escalating conflict between Israel and Hamas authorities in Gaza. At least40 Palestinians have been killed as of this hour due to Israeli airstrikes and three Israeli civilians have been killed due to rocket fire from Gaza. -

For the past two weeks, MPAC has been running ads on the WMATA buses across the DC, Virginia and Maryland areas and in the New York City subway system calling upon all concerned citizens to stand together in opposing bigotry and hatred. -

On Monday, Oct. 22, the NYC subway system will feature ads by MPAC, which is an effort to counter the recent hateful and divisive ad released by Pamela Geller’s organization, AFDI. One week later, on Monday, Oct. 29, the Metro system in DC, will post the same ads on WMATA buses across the DC, Virginia and Maryland areas. -

MPAC today condemned the Taliban’s appalling attack against Malala Yousafzai, an innocent 14-year-old girl in Pakistan, who was advocating for education. Malala was shot in the head by the Taliban for being a girl and standing up to unjust policies and oppression for the past three years through her BBC blog. -

This past weekend, Yasmin Hussein, MPAC’s Young Leaders Program Coordinator, spoke at the MAS Annual Family Camp in Atlanta. With more than 100 attendees at the camp, Hussein led a discussion with a largely youth-aged group discussing ways to improve the perception of Muslims in America. -
