MPAC and the Newseum are partnering to hold a discussion on how blasphemy laws violate the fundamental human right of free speech. This panel will present the status of blasphemy laws in the world today, and examine the use of these laws in some countries to stifle dissent.

This week, Attorney General Eric Holder released the revised “Guidance Regarding the Use of Race by Federal Law Enforcement Agencies,” expanding the guidance to now include a ban on religion, national origin, sexual orientation and gender. While this week’s release was welcomed by MPAC and other national civil rights and faith-based organizations working to improve federal profiling guidance, it included troubling exemptions and loopholes. -

Today is a big day. The Supreme Court is hearing a case looking at the limits of religious freedom in the prison setting. The case, Holt v. Hobbs, involves an Arkansas prisoner petitioning to grow a half-inch beard, which the Arkansas Department of Correction (ADC) believes is hazardous to prison security. -

The House Intelligence Committee held a hearing to “Examine Threats Posed by ISIL, al Qaeda and other Islamic Extremists.” The hearing featured three witnesses who chose to focus much of their commentary on military options to defeat ISIL. -

Last night, President Barack Obama revealed his strategy to “degrade and ultimately destroy ISIL through a comprehensive and sustained counterterrorism campaign.” Ultimately, the President stated that we will begin a campaign to defeat the threat of ISIL within Iraq and expand it to Syria as well. -

Yesterday, MPAC held a press conference in Beverly Hills, CA calling for continued cooperation between the American Muslim community and law enforcement in combating violent extremism. The speakers included a mix of community activists, faith leaders and law enforcement officials. -
