A coalition of American Muslim and Arab-American organizations (see list below) today urged the National September 11 Memorial Museum to consider editing a planned film presentation, "The Rise of Al Qaeda," because it may lead viewers to wrongly conclude that that the entire faith of Islam is responsible for the 2001 terror attacks. -

The feature film Jinn, which was released in theaters on April 4, takes a concept that is familiar to over a billion people and introduces it to mainstream entertainment. Jinn touches upon a concept that is well-known to the three major religions: Islam, Christianity and Judaism. -

Last Friday, Salam Al-Marayati, MPAC's President, presented the Safe Spaces Initiative, a campaign to provide American Muslim communities with tools for developing and maintaining a healthy community, at an LAPD community forum at the Islamic Center of Northridge. -

A rare opportunity has arisen to collectively tell the LAPD how it can better serve the needs and interests of Muslim communities based in Los Angeles. Through a survey created by the University of Nevada, Reno, and the University of Massachusetts Lowell and helped framed by MPAC, the community is invited to share their thoughts in an effort to make our communities safer and foster a stronger relationship. -

On Monday, March 3, the “Dr. Phil Show” aired an episode called “I’m Worried My Daughter May Turn into a Terrorist” which featured Edina Lekovic, MPAC's Director of Policy and Programming. The segment focuses on a mother and daughter, Darlene and Abby, who became estranged after the daughter converted to Islam two years ago. Lekovic sheds light on the teachings of Islam and dispels misconceptions about Muslims. -

This Friday, MPAC will be joined by prominent American Muslim leaders for a press conference to stand together and sign a “Declaration Against Extremism,” a document authored by MPAC Senior Adviser, Dr. Maher Hathout, reflecting upon his thoughts and priorities. -

MPAC announced it will partner with the Arab American Association of New York (AAANY) for its Spring 2014 Research Fellowship, which will document the impact of surveillance on Muslim New Yorkers. Specifically, the fellowship will look at how the civic engagement and political mobilization of targeted communities have been impacted. -

MPAC proudly announced the launch of its national campaign for comprehensive immigration reform with the release of its immigration policy paper and community toolkit. “A Nation of Immigrants: Realizing Comprehensive Immigration Reform” stresses the critical need for immigration reform and addresses the key issues being raised in the ongoing Congressional debate while the toolkit outlines opportunities for Muslims to get involved in supporting immigration reform. -

Last week, the IMAN Cultural Center held its 4th Annual Festival of Interfaith Unity in cooperation with local interfaith leaders of Abrahamic faiths (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) in order to exchange different faith-based communities’ viewpoints on their common issues and to promote coexisting in an atmosphere of sincerity and peace. -

Dr. Maher Hathout and Salam Al-Marayati, MPAC’s Senior Adviser and President, led a “Truth Over Fear: Countering Islamophobia” workshop at the recent “Seeds of Peace: Meditation and the Engaged Life” at All Saints Church. It was a day of celebration and solidarity as people from all faiths gathered to share their food, art, prayer, and culture. -

MPAC this morning expressed its shock and disbelief over the news that the suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing are two Chechen brothers who were from the Boston community. Our prayers are with the people of Boston as they remain indoors while police track the second suspect.
