Los Angeles | www.mpac.org | August 26, 2025 —The Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC), joined by allies, partner organizations, and community members, is calling for immediate accountability following the LAUSD Board’s decision to pull the agenda item on renewing the California Ethnic Studies Grant with UCLA Center X.
At a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, Rebecca Husaini, Vice President of Operations and Administration at MPAC said “UCLA is not just a partner—it is a cornerstone of academic excellence”. “An attack on UCLA is an attack on the First Amendment, and on every student in Los Angeles who deserves an education grounded in equity, dignity, and truth.”
For over a decade, the California Ethnic Studies Grant with UCLA Center X has provided vital professional development for teachers and curriculum support that affirms the voices of marginalized communities. It has helped close opportunity gaps and built classrooms rooted in inclusion.
The decision to pull this agenda item raises serious concerns that political disputes are being prioritized over the needs of students. MPAC underscores that UCLA students who protested were exercising their First Amendment rights to free speech and assembly. Disagreement with their message must not be used as a justification to dismantle programs that serve students across the city.
Our Demand: MPAC calls on the LAUSD Board to immediately restore this agenda item, hold a public vote, and vote in favor of the California Ethnic Studies Grant with UCLA Center X. Anything less is a betrayal of students, teachers, and the values of a democratic society.
“Political pressure will not silence us,” Husaini continued. “We demand accountability, transparency, and action. The Board must do its duty: restore the agenda item, vote yes, and stand with our students.”
