The Boston Marathon attack carried out by the Tsarnaev brothers, who had allegedly viewed online videos promoting extremism and violence, has raised important questions about the definition and nature of online radicalization. Multiple suspects in recent terror plots are also thought to have been pushed toward violent extremism by online predators.
At the briefing, MPAC and NAF leaders will be joined by Boston imam Suhaib Webb, homeland security adviser Mohamed Elibiary, terrorism experts Peter Bergen and Peter Neumann, and NAF Fellow Rabia Chaudhry to discuss the complex dimensions of online radicalization.
“The Boston bombings have initiated serious soul-searching within the American Muslim community and beyond, so that we can understand the dangerous forces that lead to such evil acts,” said Haris Tarin, Director of MPAC’s DC Office. “This briefing will provide decision-makers a better understanding of the nature of the threat online and how we as a community can counter violent extremism.”
