Sleeves Up: Blood Donations and Volunteering During COVID-19

With much of the world in quarantine, the need for blood donors is higher than ever. In this webinar, CEO of Red Cross LA, Jarrett Barrios, spoke on the extra precautions his organization is taking to ensure donor safety, and how you can continue giving blood to ensure a stable supply for the uncertain weeks ahead. Jarrett Barrios serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the American Red Cross Los Angeles Region. Under his leadership, the Los Angeles Region has doubled its volunteer work in preparedness and disaster response in southern California, deepening its impact in some of southern California’s most vulnerable communities through Prepare LA, a part of southern California’s Prepare SoCal initiative. The Region’s innovative resiliency-building efforts have been recognized locally and nationally, including its impactful work to reduce home-fire deaths through the Sound the Alarm campaign. For their leadership on developing disaster response and recovery systems after Hurricane Harvey to better serve Latino communities nationally, he and Red Cross Chicago CEO Celena Roldan received the Red Cross Humanitarian Services Diversity & Inclusion Award. Barrios is a member of the North American Humanitarian Response Initiative’s Underserved Population Thematic Working Group. In this webinar, Dr. Abdul El-Sayed and MPAC President Salam Al-Marayati discuss his El-Sayed's book, Healing Politics, where the author traces the life of a young idealist, weaving together powerful personal stories and fascinating forays into history and science. Marrying his unique perspective with the science of epidemiology, Dr. El-Sayed diagnoses an underlying epidemic afflicting our country, an epidemic of insecurity. And to heal the rifts this epidemic has created, he lays out a new direction for the progressive movement. This is a bold, personal, and compellingly original book from a prominent young Muslim leader. A child of immigrants, Dr. Abdul El-Sayed grew up feeling a responsibility to help others. He threw himself into the study of medicine and excelled—winning a Rhodes Scholarship, earning two advanced degrees, and landing a tenure-track position at Columbia University. At 30, he became the youngest city health official in America, tasked with rebuilding Detroit's health department after years of austerity policies. He is the Chair at Southpaw Michigan. As a professor at Columbia University's Department of Epidemiology, Abdul became an internationally recognized expert in health policy and health inequalities. About Ali Ahmad: Ali Ahmad is the Associate Director for Communications at the U.S. Census Bureau. He is responsible for leading the internal and external communications activities of the United States’ largest statistical agency. This includes oversight of marketing, public affairs, congressional and intergovernmental affairs, partner engagement, and media relations. Prior to joining the Census Bureau in 2018, Ahmad worked in policy and communications positions at the federal, state, and local levels, and with a national trade association.
