Our Work on the Muslim Ban

Since January 2017 we have been working around the clock to protect American Muslims from the discriminatory Muslim Ban. Even after several versions of the travel ban, we are continuing this work to ensure that this ban and any future ones are made impossible.
Here is a timeline of our work:
2020
-
March 9th-13th - The House of Representatives vote on the NO BAN Act will take place.

February 13th - We ensured that NO BAN Act retained its core functions during the markup process. The act is now moving to a House vote.

January 30th - Hosted a social impact panel at Sundance 2020 around the documentary American Muslim, which follows the effects of the Muslim Ban on five American families.
2019
-
Nov 1st - We published a statement in response to reports that the Trump administration is considering adding more countries to the Muslim Travel Ban.

Sep 24th - Congress held a Muslim Ban Oversight Hearing after our many months of calling for it.

May 20th - After many months of work, the NO BAN Act was introduced to Congress.

May 16th - We held a Congressional briefing on the Muslim Ban Visa Waivers with Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren

April 10th - Published a breakdown of what the NO BAN act does.

January 28th - We worked with members of Congress to introduce legislation which would end Trump’s Muslim Ban and prohibit future such bans, the introduction of H.R. 810 was a result of that.

January 28th - In partnership with NILC, the ACLU and Oxfam we hosted the Muslim Ban Congressional Reception
2018
-
December 20th - We demanded a review of the Muslim Ban policy from the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and House Judiciary Committee with a coalition of 118 national groups.

December 5th - We called for the Immigration and Nationality Act to be amended, to ensure that a future Muslim Ban was made impossible and for Congressional oversight to the Muslim Ban.

June 29th - We held a rally in Los Angeles to stand together against the Muslim Ban.

June 28th - After SCOTUS legalized discrimination, we published our plan to continue to fight the Muslim Ban.

June 25th - We held a rally in DC with other allies to protest the SCOTUS decision to uphold the Muslim Ban.
2017
-
June 30th - Ensured that Muslim voices were heard in the Media about the harm of the Muslim Ban.

April 10th - In response to our advocacy, Secretary of Homeland Security John Kelly opened an investigation into the implementation of the Muslim Ban.

March 23rd - Published an op-ed in the Huffington Post on the effects of the Muslim Ban on national security.
-
March 13th - We joined legal briefs in two cases where federal district judges (one in Hawaii and one in Maryland) issued temporary restraining orders on President Trump’s revised Muslim ban.

February 13th - Along with George Takei and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti we hosted “Standing with American Muslims” as part of our #NeverAgain campaign.

February 8th - Published a guide on how to fight the Muslim Ban.

February 7th - Launched the #NeverAgain campaign to stand in solidarity against the Muslim Ban with George Takei.

January 29th - Released a statement and an action plan against the Muslim Ban.
-
January 10th - Teamed up with actor/activist George Takei and Care2 circulate a petition to stand against national security being used as a justification for discrimination again.
