Los Angeles’ Immigration Summit

How the city of angels is responding to defend its immigrant communities

January 10, 2020

“Muslims continue to live in post-9/11 America - with the rise of white nationalism and a Hollywood that maintains stereotypes. This will last beyond Trump.” - SALAM AL-MARAYATI

On January 9, during CCF and USC’s Center for the Study of Immigrant Integration’s The Future of Immigrants In Los Angeles conference at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, MPAC President Salam Al-Marayati spoke to how LA is responding to defend its immigrant communities on a panel moderated by Univision’s Leon Krauze, alongside Senait Admassu of the African Coalition, Cynthia Buiza of CIPC, and Angelica Salas of CHIRLA.

Salam noted that we need to engage in immigration discussions through a post-9/11 frame, whereby we must be cognizant of the rise in hate crimes and white supremacist activities. Organizations like MPAC, who participate in policy, advocacy and community protection, act as a shield for the vulnerable. Our partnerships with other organizations in hate crime prevention and immigration coalitions, like HVPPLA, is absolutely critical to this kind of work.
