Congress Calls for Human Rights in China
January 24, 2019

Last week, legislation was introduced in both the House and Senate which would “take steps to condemn gross human rights violations of ethnic Turkic Muslims in Xinjiang,” and call “for an end to arbitrary detention, torture, and harassment of these communities inside and outside China.” Both H.Res.649, introduced by Chris Smith (R-NJ), and S.178 by Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), have garnered support across the aisle to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region.
In the last Congress, opposition to the Chinese government’s policy of cultural genocide gained momentum through hearings and condemnatory legislation. These bills are the most recent manifestations of this growing tide of opposition. We condemn the treatment of China’s treatment of the Muslim minority in the country’s Xinjiang province and strongly support the these current bills, as well as any other measures which would address the cultural genocide being perpetrated against the Uyghur Muslims.
