International Day for Countering Hate Speech: A Message from MPAC’s CSTP

Today, June 18th, is the UN’s International Day for Countering Hate Speech. It’s a day meant to shine a light on the dangers of bigotry and push for global action against racism and intolerance. For us at MPAC, this isn’t just a day on the calendar, it is the reality we confront every single day.

Our founding director of the Center for Security Technology & Policy (CSTP), Khuram Zaman, shares a firsthand look at what we’re up against.

Behind the scenes, our team is constantly monitoring, tracking, and analyzing the online hate targeting Muslims and turn that raw data into a shield. We take our findings straight to Congress and our coalition partners to demand change.

Through live coding, we track hostile tweets in real-time. This allows us to spot immediate dangers and quickly alert local mosques so they can protect their communities. The reality is heavy: our data has revealed an alarming 11-fold increase in attacks and threats against Muslims since January.

That staggering number was the exact catalyst that drove us to launch our quarterly security briefings with mosques nationwide. The hate that starts online doesn’t stay online, and we refuse to let our communities stand unprotected.

🛡️ If you see hate speech or violent threats online, please report them to us. Let’s look out for one another and keep our communities safe.
